Newark is mourning the loss of former New Jersey Assembly member Alberto Coutinho, who was killed Sunday morning in a car crash in the city he long called home and championed throughout his public life. He was 56.
Authorities said the collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of McCarter Highway and South Street. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Coutinho succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka described Coutinho as a driving force in the city’s growth and community development. Baraka noted that upcoming cultural events, including the annual Portuguese Festival and international soccer celebrations tied to FIFA competitions, would feel markedly different without his presence.
U.S. Senator Cory Booker also paid tribute, remembering Coutinho as a compassionate leader and mentor. Booker emphasized his commitment to youth development, noting that Coutinho spent years coaching local children in the Ironbound community while simultaneously serving in public office. According to Booker, his legacy was rooted in service and an unwavering dedication to those around him.
Coutinho’s political career ended in 2013 when he resigned following legal charges. Earlier this year, he received a gubernatorial pardon, marking a new chapter in his life. Friends and former colleagues say he had remained active in community affairs and was focused on continuing to give back.
