Hawaii Faces Fresh Flood Threat as Another Kona Storm Approaches Already-Damaged Islands

Just weeks after devastating storms swept across Hawaii, residents are once again bracing for another round of heavy rain, strong winds, and possible flash flooding.

Communities are still recovering from recent Kona low systems that brought record-breaking rainfall and severe flooding. Areas like Waialua and Haleiwa saw emergency evacuations as rising waters forced families onto rooftops for safety.

In places such as Kaneohe and Puu Alii, rainfall totals exceeded 38 inches within days, leaving homes buried in mud and debris. Residents described heartbreaking scenes, with some losing nearly everything.

Governor Josh Green called the disaster one of the worst floods the state has experienced in two decades, with damages potentially reaching $1 billion.

Now, forecasters warn that another Kona low is forming and could impact the islands by midweek. The system is expected to pull in deep tropical moisture, increasing the risk of intense downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

The biggest concern is the ground itself. Saturated soil from previous storms cannot absorb much more water, meaning even moderate rainfall could quickly trigger flash floods, rising streams, and dangerous runoff.

For many residents, the fear isn’t just about the incoming storm—it’s the reality that recovery is far from over, and another disaster may already be on the way.
