A Michigan father walked into his children’s bedrooms on a quiet school morning, said “good morning,” and then opened fire.
That is not a scene from a crime thriller. That is what Jeffrey Smerer, 45, from Port Huron, Michigan, admits he did.
And this week, he confessed to it all in court.
A Regular Morning That Turned Into a Nightmare
September 2025 started like any other day for the Smerer family. Kids waking up. School bags. Morning routines.
But their father had a different plan.
Smerer had been secretly preparing for an entire week. He had stashed medication in the master bedroom. He had his .380 handgun ready in the gun safe beneath his bed.
At 6 a.m., he woke up, retrieved the gun, and walked into his youngest children’s room.
He said “good morning.”
Then he started shooting.
What He Told Police
Thirteen-year-old Bentley was still under his blanket, on his phone. Smerer aimed at the glow of the screen and fired.
Twelve-year-old Kinzley was just getting up. He aimed at her throat.
Then he went for his 17-year-old son Kayleb, who was lounging on the couch. Kayleb did not survive.
When detectives asked Smerer why he targeted those three children specifically, his answer was chilling — he said he was simply “closest” to them.
Why Did He Do It?
Smerer was not facing a serious criminal charge. He was stressed about a sentencing hearing for an old indecent exposure case from 2020. He told police he was worried he “might be going to jail.”
That fear — over a minor charge — is what he says drove him to plan a murder-suicide for an entire week.
His plan to take his own life failed when his gun jammed. His wife and 19-year-old son disarmed him.
Guilty on All Counts
This week, Smerer stood in court and pleaded guilty — no deal, no negotiation.
Five life sentences now await him. His sentencing is scheduled for June 29.
Kayleb Smerer was 17 years old. He never made it to school that morning.
