Indiana Husband Charged in 17-Year-Old Cold Case Murder of Wife in South Bend

Nearly two decades after a young mother was found stabbed to death inside her vehicle, Indiana authorities have made an arrest in a case that long haunted investigators and the victim’s family.

Lucio Lerma Sr., 56, has been formally charged with murder in connection with the 2007 death of his wife, 33-year-old Delia Lerma. He was arraigned Monday in South Bend following a grand jury indictment. The judge ordered that he be held without bail as the case moves forward.

Disappearance in 2007

The investigation dates back to December 4, 2007. According to investigators, Delia Lerma left her home that afternoon to make a quick trip to a nearby grocery store — reportedly less than a minute’s drive away — to purchase ingredients for tamales. She told family members she planned to meet a friend and would return shortly.

However, she never came back.

Later that evening, Lucio Lerma reported his wife missing. Family members said a store clerk recalled seeing Delia at the grocery store that day, confirming she had arrived at her destination.

Grim Discovery Days Later

Four days after she was reported missing, authorities located Delia Lerma’s van. Inside, they found her body. She had been stabbed multiple times.

At the time, investigators conducted extensive interviews with friends, relatives, and acquaintances. Despite those efforts, the case eventually went cold, and no arrests were made for years.

Cold Case Reopened

Authorities have not yet released details outlining what new evidence or developments led to the recent indictment. Court documents explaining the basis for the charges have not been made public. A transcript of the arraignment hearing has been requested.

Cold cases often hinge on advancements in forensic science, renewed witness cooperation, or re-examination of earlier evidence. While officials have not specified what reignited this investigation, the arrest marks a significant development in a case that remained unresolved for nearly 17 years.

Upcoming Court Proceedings

Lucio Lerma Sr. is scheduled to appear in court again on April 6. Prosecutors will continue to present their case as proceedings move forward.

For Delia Lerma’s family, the arrest represents a long-awaited step toward accountability after years of uncertainty. The judicial process will now determine the outcome of a case that has lingered in the shadows for nearly two decades.
