A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken a North Carolina community after a 15-year-old boy was allegedly shot and killed during a dispute over a pair of jeans. The incident has left a grieving father searching for answers and urging young people to stay away from gun violence.
CJ Alston, a resident of Raleigh, is mourning the loss of his only child, Cayden, who was fatally shot at their home on Friday morning. According to Alston, his son had been attempting to sell a pair of jeans when two teenage boys arrived at the house. The situation quickly escalated into a fatal confrontation.
Alston revealed that he had warned Cayden the previous night not to invite anyone over, as the teenager was grounded at the time. Despite the warning, the boys came to the residence the following morning, reportedly under the pretense of purchasing the jeans.
The father explained that a disagreement broke out when the boys allegedly refused to pay for the clothing. Cayden, determined not to hand over the item without payment, stood his ground. It was during this dispute that one of the boys allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him.
The traumatic events unfolded within minutes. According to timestamps captured on the family’s doorbell camera, the boys arrived at approximately 11:36 a.m., and law enforcement officers were on the scene by 11:51 a.m. Despite the swift response, Cayden succumbed to his injuries.
Recounting the devastating aftermath, Alston described how his son tried to move around the house after being shot, leaving behind heartbreaking evidence of his struggle. The father said Cayden attempted to clean up the blood while seeking help, a scene that continues to haunt him.
Alston also noted suspicious behavior from the visitors before the incident. Upon reviewing the security footage, he observed the teenagers lingering outside the home, walking around the property, and appearing determined to gain entry. He believes they arrived with harmful intentions.
Now left with only memories and photographs, Alston says the loss of his son has created an unimaginable void in his life. Cayden was his only child, and the bond they shared was deeply cherished.
“What I’ll miss most is his face and being able to talk to him,” Alston said. “He was everything to me.”
In the wake of the tragedy, Alston is speaking out with a message aimed at young people everywhere. He hopes Cayden’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of gun violence and the importance of making better choices.
“I just want the youth to understand—leave the guns alone,” he said. “Nothing good comes from them.”
Authorities have confirmed that a juvenile petition has been filed against the teenager accused of the shooting. Due to the suspect’s age, law enforcement officials have not released further details regarding the individual’s identity. The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident has sparked grief and concern within the Raleigh community, with many calling for stronger efforts to address youth violence and promote safer environments for children. Cayden’s death stands as a tragic reminder of how quickly lives can be changed forever and underscores the urgent need for awareness, guidance, and support for young people navigating conflict in today’s world.
