An Iowa teenager is accused of one of the most chilling crimes in Sioux City’s recent history — and it’s the details after the killing that are shocking people most.
What Happened on New Year’s Day
JK Athree, who was 17 at the time, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 43-year-old Jermel Ellington on January 1, 2026.
According to police, the two had a history. Months earlier, Ellington had stabbed Athree with a screwdriver after catching him trying to break into cars while drunk.
On New Year’s Day, the two crossed paths again — both sitting in a parked car with others, drinking alcohol. After a brief argument, Athree allegedly stabbed Ellington multiple times — in the thigh, back, neck, and chest.
An Hour With the Body
Here’s where the case takes a disturbing turn.
After the attack, Athree allegedly stayed inside the car — with Ellington’s body — for over an hour, listening to music.
He then walked into his family’s home and told them there was a dead body outside. He reportedly asked them to help him hide it.
They refused — and called 911 instead.
When officers arrived, Athree had reportedly become aggressive and tried to flee. He was detained at the scene.
The Court Battle
The case is now in adult court. A judge rejected a motion to move it to juvenile court, saying adult court gives the best chance for long-term rehabilitation and community safety.
Meanwhile, Athree’s defense is fighting to throw out his confessions. Their argument: his mother, whose first language is not English, was never given an interpreter when waiving her son’s rights.
The defense also claims Athree was intoxicated when he made his statements to police.
If confessions are admitted, the defense plans to argue self-defense, insanity, and diminished responsibility.
What’s Next
Trial is currently scheduled for November 2026.
Athree remains in Woodbury County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
