Long Island Crossing Guard Dies After Being Struck by Allegedly Drug-Impaired Driver in Morning Crash

A Long Island community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a beloved crossing guard who died one week after being struck by a pickup truck while on duty.

John Miro, 70, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Friday, according to the Nassau County Police Department. Miro had been critically injured in a violent crash that occurred during the busy morning commute in Merrick, New York.

Tragic Morning at a Busy Intersection

The crash happened just after 8 a.m. on February 26 at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Merrick Avenue in Merrick. Miro was performing his duties as a crossing guard when the incident unfolded.

Prosecutors allege that Joshua Alvarado, 30, of Queens, passed out behind the wheel of his pickup truck while driving to work. Authorities claim he was awakened by other drivers honking at him. In a sudden reaction, he allegedly pressed the accelerator, attempted to make a turn, jumped the curb, and drove onto the sidewalk — striking Miro.

The impact left Miro with severe injuries, including:

  • Broken ribs
  • A fractured skull
  • Traumatic brain injuries

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he fought for his life for a week before succumbing to his injuries.

Charges Upgraded After Death

Following Miro’s death, the charges against Alvarado were upgraded. He now faces:

  • Manslaughter
  • Second-degree assault

Initially, Alvarado had been charged with vehicular assault and driving while ability impaired by drugs.

Prosecutors stated that Alvarado was allegedly high on drugs at the time of the crash and reportedly passed out multiple times while speaking to law enforcement officers afterward.

However, his defense attorney argues that Alvarado had only taken legally prescribed medication for anxiety and pain. The defense also claims that icy road conditions may have contributed to the crash.

Bail Set at Over $1 Million Bond

Bail has been set at $500,000 cash or $1.2 million bond as the legal process moves forward.

Community in Mourning

John Miro’s death has deeply affected the local community. Crossing guards play a vital role in protecting pedestrians, especially children during school hours. The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced by those working to keep others safe.

As the case proceeds through the courts, many are left grieving the loss of a man who dedicated his time to safeguarding others — only to become a victim himself.

The investigation remains ongoing.
