Aroutine Monday morning turned fatal in Calumet County after a Kia SUV collided with an empty dump truck at a rural intersection, leaving the SUV’s driver dead and raising questions about what happened in the moments before impact.

The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies were dispatched at approximately 11:11 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026, to the intersection of State Highway 57 and County Highway PP in the Town of Chilton. What they found was a devastating two-vehicle crash — a Kia sport utility vehicle and a dump truck, both badly damaged, at a crossing that sees regular traffic from the surrounding rural communities.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Kia was traveling westbound on County Highway PP. The driver had stopped at the stop sign controlling traffic at that intersection — but then pulled forward into the path of the southbound dump truck on Highway 57. The collision was fatal for the Kia’s driver.

The victim, a 39-year-old man from Shawano, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his name, pending notification of his family. The dump truck driver, a 72-year-old man from Luxemburg, was not physically injured in the crash.

Why the Kia driver entered the intersection into the path of the oncoming truck remains under active investigation.— Calumet County Sheriff’s Office

The dump truck was reported empty at the time of the crash, though the size and weight difference between it and the Kia would have been significant regardless. Investigators have not yet indicated whether speed, visibility, or other factors played a role.

The investigation remains ongoing, the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. No citations or charges have been announced.

This is a developing story. The victim’s name will be released once family has been notified. Check back for updates as the investigation continues.
