Michigan Man Survives After Massive Tree Splits His Home During Powerful Winds

A Michigan homeowner is counting his blessings after a large tree crashed through his house, leaving it severely damaged and narrowly missing the spot where he usually sleeps.

Mike Baker, who lives in Redford Township in Wayne County, said the terrifying moment happened while he was relaxing at home with his dogs. Strong winds had been moving through the area when he suddenly heard what he described as a loud explosion.

“I was just sitting on the couch with my dogs and heard a huge boom,” Baker said.

Within seconds, part of the roof collapsed as a tree that had been uprooted by the wind slammed directly into his home. Debris filled the rooms, and the structure was left split and unstable.

Baker believes a recent surgery may have saved his life. Because he has been recovering and off work, he was not in his bedroom at the time of the crash. Under normal circumstances, he says he would have been asleep in the exact area where the tree came down.

“Usually, I would have been sleeping in my room,” he explained. “When I looked in there afterward, debris was piled up about waist high. There wasn’t any open space left.”

As chaos unfolded, Baker’s first instinct was to make sure his dogs were safe. He pushed through falling debris to reach them. Fortunately, both dogs made it out unharmed, and the trio escaped the house safely.

“I started moving debris and trying to get to my dog. Luckily, he ran past me, and both of them were waiting for me. We got out with just what we were wearing,” Baker said.

The tree appears to have been uprooted entirely by severe winds before crashing into the master bedroom area. The damage left the home he had lived in for seven years nearly cut in half.

Despite the destruction, Baker says he feels incredibly fortunate.

“My life could have been completely different. I might not even be here,” he said. “That’s how serious it was.”

While the house will require major repairs, Baker says he is focusing on the one thing that matters most — he and his pets survived what could have been a fatal disaster.
