Midday Apartment Fire Damages 12 Units, Forces Residents Out as Crews Face Water Supply Issues

Smyrna, Georgia — A sudden apartment fire in Smyrna on Tuesday afternoon left multiple families scrambling for safety after flames tore through a residential building, damaging at least 12 units and forcing residents to temporarily leave their homes.

According to the Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services, crews were called to the scene shortly after 1 p.m. at an apartment complex on Woodsong Way. What began as a fire on the second floor quickly intensified, spreading upward to the third floor and into the roof, making the situation more difficult to control.

How the Fire Spread

Firefighters arriving at the location were met with heavy flames already pushing through the structure. Officials said the fire’s rapid movement from one floor to another increased the risk for residents, especially those living on upper levels.

Crews immediately focused on evacuating residents while simultaneously working to contain the blaze. People inside the building were guided out safely, preventing what could have been a far more serious situation.

Extent of Damage

Authorities confirmed that a total of 12 apartment units were impacted:

  • 8 units suffered severe fire damage
  • 4 additional units were affected by smoke and water

Despite the destruction, officials reported that no injuries occurred — a relief given how quickly the fire escalated.

Firefighters Faced Water Supply Challenges

One of the biggest obstacles during the response was limited water access. Fire crews initially struggled to get enough water pressure to fully combat the flames.

Lt. Steve Bennett explained that firefighters had to adapt quickly, extending additional hose lines across the street to another apartment complex to secure a sufficient water supply. This step helped crews regain control and continue firefighting efforts more effectively.

Residents Displaced but Supported

While the exact number of displaced residents has not been confirmed, the fire has temporarily disrupted many lives. In a positive development, apartment management informed officials that vacant units are available, allowing affected residents to stay within the same complex for now.

Ongoing Investigation

The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation. Fire crews stayed on-site into the afternoon, working to extinguish lingering hot spots and ensure the building was safe.

A Close Call for the Community

Although property damage is significant, the absence of injuries highlights the quick response of emergency crews and the timely evacuation of residents. For many families, the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly situations can change — and how critical emergency preparedness can be.

Officials are expected to release further updates as more information becomes available.
