Milwaukee Man Hospitalized in Critical Condition After Alleged Drug Ingestion During Police Pursuit

MILWAUKEE — A 31-year-old man remains in critical condition after reportedly ingesting illegal drugs while being taken into custody during a joint law enforcement operation in Milwaukee.

According to authorities, Milwaukee police officers were patrolling alongside federal agents from the FBI and DEA on Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation related to suspected drug activity. During the operation, officers identified a vehicle believed to be connected to the case and began following it.

Police said the driver, who was considered a suspect in the investigation, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers pursued him into a nearby residential yard, where he was eventually located in a confined area between a fence and a garage.

Authorities stated that the man resisted arrest and did not comply with verbal commands. A police K-9 unit was deployed to assist during the apprehension. Officials noted that the dog may have bitten the suspect, though that detail has not yet been confirmed and remains under review.

During the struggle, officers believe the suspect swallowed an illegal substance. Shortly afterward, he lost consciousness. Upon realizing he was unresponsive, officers began administering life-saving measures, including Narcan, a medication commonly used to reverse opioid overdoses.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

In addition, two Milwaukee Police Department supervisors and one FBI agent were taken to a hospital after being exposed to an unidentified substance during the incident. They were evaluated and later released.

Four officers involved in the arrest have been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in cases involving serious injury.

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team has launched an independent review of the incident, with the Greenfield Police Department serving as the lead investigative agency. Authorities indicated that video footage from the encounter will be released at a later time.
