Monterey, Virginia Weather Alert: Overnight Freeze Near 32°F Puts Crops and Roads at Risk Until Friday Morning

Monterey, VA — A sharp drop in temperatures is expected overnight across parts of western Virginia and eastern West Virginia, bringing a freeze threat that could impact crops, plumbing, and early-morning travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are forecast to fall to around 32°F between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. Friday, with the most critical window between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Areas likely to be affected include Monterey, Petersburg, and Franklin, along with surrounding rural and valley regions.

Clear skies and calm winds will create ideal conditions for rapid heat loss overnight. This setup increases the chances of frost formation, particularly in low-lying areas, valleys, and open farmland, where colder air tends to settle.

The freeze poses a serious risk to sensitive crops and vegetation, which can be damaged or killed within hours of exposure. Farmers and gardeners in agricultural zones around Monterey and Petersburg are especially vulnerable. In addition, unprotected outdoor pipes could freeze, particularly in elevated or exposed locations.

Travelers should also remain cautious early Friday morning. Patchy frost may form on bridges and untreated roads, including stretches of US-220, WV-28, and US-33, potentially creating slippery conditions during the morning commute.

Residents are advised to cover or bring in plants, insulate exposed plumbing, and limit early travel on rural roads where frost buildup is more likely.

Officials emphasize that conditions can change quickly overnight, and residents should stay alert for updates as temperatures reach their lowest levels before sunrise.
