Motorcyclist killed after colliding with school bus carrying students in Tippecanoe County

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Indiana — A Friday afternoon crash at a rural intersection has left one person dead and an entire community with questions.

Indiana State Police responded just after 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026, to the intersection of State Road 28 and County Road 400 East following reports of a serious collision between a motorcycle and a school bus.

The bus belonged to the Tippecanoe School Corporation.

What Investigators Found at the Scene

Preliminary findings from an Indiana State Police crash reconstructionist indicate the school bus was traveling southbound on County Road 400 East.

The bus stopped at the intersection with State Road 28 before attempting to turn left and travel eastbound.

A motorcycle traveling westbound on State Road 28 then struck the school bus inside the intersection.

Despite life-saving efforts by first responders at the scene, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released. The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office is working to notify the family before making that information public.

Four Students Were on the Bus

At the time of the crash, four students from Wainwright Middle School were aboard the bus.

Authorities confirmed that none of the students were injured. The bus driver also escaped without injury.

For the families of those four children, Friday afternoon took a frightening turn — and for many, the relief of knowing their kids are safe is likely mixed with grief for the family who lost a loved one at that same intersection.

A Major Multi-Agency Response

The scale of the response reflected the seriousness of the crash.

Indiana State Police crash reconstructionists led the investigation and were assisted by troopers from the Lafayette Post, the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office, Randolph/Clarks Hill Fire Department, and Tippecanoe County EMS.

Crash reconstructionists are specialists trained to piece together exactly how and why a collision happened — their findings will be central to the investigation going forward.

Investigation Is Ongoing

Indiana State Police have not yet released a final determination of cause. The investigation remains active and open.

Updates are expected as the coroner completes family notification and investigators finalize their reconstruction of the crash sequence.
