A 52-year-old Ohio woman is being remembered as a hero after sacrificing her life to save her young grandson from a speeding vehicle that crashed into a driveway.
Authorities in Pickaway County confirmed that Laura J. Hammond of Mt. Sterling was fatally struck on February 27 along Walnut Creek Pike in Circleville after pushing a child out of harm’s way moments before impact.
Tragedy Unfolds in Seconds
According to officials, emergency crews were called to the scene around 10 a.m. following reports of a serious crash.
Investigators determined that a Nissan Sentra traveling southbound on Walnut Creek Pike veered off the west side of the road. The vehicle then tore through two residential yards before slamming into a parked Chevrolet Equinox in a driveway.
At the moment the Nissan struck the parked SUV, Hammond was pinned between the two vehicles.
A Split-Second Decision That Saved a Life
Before being hit, authorities say Hammond grabbed the child — identified as her grandson — and threw him out of the vehicle’s path.
Officials believe her quick action “more than likely saved his life.”
In recounting the heartbreaking moment, a sheriff’s office captain explained that Hammond physically lifted the child and tossed him away from danger, absorbing the full force of the crash herself.
The child survived and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Injuries and Ongoing Investigation
Hammond was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead due to her injuries.
The driver of the Nissan was also taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Local authorities, along with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No additional details have been released at this time.
