Placentia Mom Arrested After 2-Year-Old Son Found Dead in Bathtub — Murder Charges Filed

A Placentia mother has been charged with murder in the shocking death of her 2-year-old son, Aidan, who was found unresponsive during what was initially believed to be an accidental drowning.

Melissa Lynn Beisel, 41, of Fresno, now faces a murder charge and a felony count of assault on a child with force likely to cause great bodily injury resulting in death. She is being held without bail and is expected to appear for arraignment on June 30.

What Happened That Night

On September 22, officers responded to a home near Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue in Placentia after receiving a 911 call. Little Aidan was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Beisel told detectives she had been bathing her son in a storage bin inside a walk-in shower — using it as a makeshift bathtub. She claimed she stepped away for just two minutes to get soap, and when she returned, she found her son facedown in the water.

But investigators weren’t convinced.

The Shocking Details That Changed Everything

Beisel never called 911. It was the boy’s father who made the emergency call — after finding her inside the shower with their dead toddler.

What police discovered next was deeply disturbing. Beisel had barricaded herself in the bathroom with her unresponsive son for six hours. When officers finally reached her, she was found sitting in the shower with the water still running, alongside Aidan’s body. She also had superficial stab wounds on her neck and arms.

Drowning Ruled Out — Death Declared a Homicide

Investigators initially considered accidental drowning as the cause of death. However, after a thorough investigation, drowning was ruled out and the manner of death was officially classified as homicide. The exact cause of Aidan’s death has not been publicly disclosed.

Following the incident, Beisel relocated to Coarsegold, where she was later arrested.

DA Speaks Out

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer released a powerful statement following the charges:

“A mother is a child’s first protector. For a mother to use the very arms that are meant to shield her child from harm to instead physically extinguish the life of a child she created is a depravity which we will never be able to fully comprehend.”

Spitzer added that the death of a child is a grief that can never be fully explained or healed, and praised the work of first responders, police, and prosecutors involved in the case.

What Comes Next

If convicted on the murder charge, Beisel faces 25 years to life in prison.

The case continues to shake the community of Placentia, as many struggle to understand how a mother could allegedly take the life of her own toddler. Justice for little Aidan remains the focus as the case heads toward trial.
