A Long Island community is grappling with shock after authorities revealed that a former Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) treasurer, who also served as an officer with the New York Police Department, has been accused of misusing school funds for personal expenses over several years.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, 43-year-old Jodi Scarlatos of Centereach was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation into financial irregularities linked to the Jericho Elementary School PTA. Officials allege that more than $50,000 was siphoned off between 2020 and 2023 while she served as the organization’s treasurer.
How the Alleged Scheme Unfolded
Prosecutors say Scarlatos was entrusted with managing PTA funds, including access to a debit card meant strictly for school-related expenses. Instead, she allegedly used the money for personal spending, including dining, travel, electronics, and entertainment purchases. Transactions reportedly included payments to retail stores, hotels, and service providers, raising concerns once discrepancies were discovered.
Authorities further allege that some funds were directly transferred from the PTA account into her personal bank account, intensifying the scope of the case.
