West Virginia: A disturbing child neglect case has emerged from Ritchie County, West Virginia, where a 20-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly leaving a toddler alone inside a freezing garage while he worked on his truck. Authorities say the situation placed the child at serious risk, especially as outside temperatures dropped to just 2 degrees.
According to officials, the incident took place in February but came to light after two individuals approached authorities seeking a protective order against the accused, identified as Ian Newlon. This prompted an investigation by the West Virginia State Police, who later uncovered troubling details about the child’s condition.
Investigators say the toddler had been left in a garage that was being heated by a wood stove. However, due to the extreme cold and the size of the space, the heating was reportedly insufficient to maintain a safe temperature. During this time, Newlon was allegedly working on his truck, leaving the child unattended for an extended period.
The situation became more alarming when the child was later handed over to another caregiver. According to the criminal complaint, the toddler was found in poor condition — with a soiled diaper, and showing signs of illness including vomiting and coughing. The caregiver quickly sought medical attention, and the child was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities later questioned Newlon, who reportedly admitted to leaving the child in the garage while he worked. Based on the findings, he was arrested and charged with child neglect creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury. He was taken to the North Central Regional Jail following his arrest.
Jail records indicate that Newlon posted a $15,000 bond and has since been released. He has been appointed a public defender, but has not yet entered a plea. His next court appearance has not been publicly listed.
Officials have not confirmed the exact relationship between Newlon and the child. Additionally, the toddler’s current health condition has not been disclosed.
Authorities continue to emphasize the seriousness of leaving young children in unsafe environments, particularly in extreme weather conditions. The case remains under investigation, and further updates may follow as legal proceedings continue.
