Red Flag Warning Issued For Central Florida Amid Record-Breaking Heat

ORLANDO, FL – High temperatures and bone-dry conditions have triggered an urgent Fire Weather Warning across Central Florida this Thursday, as record highs threaten to settle over the drought-stricken region.

Record Heat Surge

A stalling cold front in the Southeast is allowing a surge of hot, tropical air to blanket the Sunshine State. Forecasters expect temperatures to run 5 to 10 degrees above average, with many areas in Central Florida seeing highs in the low-to-mid 90s.

Record-breaking temperatures are possible for several coastal and inland cities, including:

  • Daytona Beach
  • Jacksonville
  • The Space Coast
  • The Treasure Coast

Elevated Wildfire Risk

The combination of intense heat and a widespread drought—which currently affects nearly 99% of Florida—has created a dangerous environment for wildfires.

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Warning (Red Flag Warning) for Orlando, Daytona Beach, and surrounding areas. With humidity levels dropping as low as 25% and wind gusts reaching 25 mph, authorities warn that any fire that ignites could spread with “explosive” speed.

Short-Lived Relief Expected

While the FOX Forecast Center predicts an increase in moisture by the weekend, the relief is expected to be minimal. Scattered showers and storms may arrive by Sunday, but total rainfall amounts will likely not be enough to break the persistent drought conditions.

Safety Precautions

Local fire officials are urging residents to avoid any outdoor burning, including fire pits and trash disposal, during these high-wind conditions. Drivers are also reminded to never toss lit cigarettes out of car windows, as the dry grass along highways can ignite instantly.
