ROSELAND, Ill. — A disagreement over rent money escalated into deadly violence this week in the Roseland neighborhood, leaving one man dead and another fighting for his life, according to family members of the victims.
Christopher Patterson, 23, was shot and killed inside his apartment Wednesday afternoon near 100th Street and State Street. His 26-year-old roommate was also shot during the incident and remains in critical condition after being struck 19 times, relatives said.
Family and friends gathered outside the apartment Friday, where Patterson’s mother spoke emotionally about the loss of her son.
“That’s my son, and he’s gone,” she said through tears. “I’m going to need support to get through this.”
Shooting Followed Argument Over Rent
Relatives said the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving a childhood friend Patterson had allowed to live in the apartment. According to family members, Patterson recently asked the friend to contribute toward rent after months of not requesting any financial help.
“He opened his doors to him and gave him a place to live,” said Patterson’s cousin, Briah Banks. “His kind heart is what led to this.”
Banks said the conversation about rent turned violent, resulting in the fatal shooting.
“You finally ask for something, and this is the result,” she said.
Suspect Still at Large
Police have not released the identity of the suspected shooter. Investigators confirmed the case remains open, and no arrests have been announced as of Friday night.
Family members said the suspect fled the scene after the shooting and allegedly stole Patterson’s black Kia Soul. The vehicle has not yet been recovered.
“We treated you like family,” Banks said in an emotional appeal. “If you’re watching this, turn yourself in.”
Community and Family Seek Justice
Banks, who is a Chicago radio personality, said the tragedy has deeply affected her both personally and professionally.
“It’s different being on the other side of the mic,” she said. “It hurts.”
The family said they are praying for the recovery of Patterson’s roommate and urging authorities to continue pursuing the suspect.
“We pray that investigators stay on the job like they say they are,” Banks added.
Remembering Christopher Patterson
Patterson is survived by several family members, including a young son. Loved ones described him as generous and willing to help others, even at his own expense.
Police said anyone with information related to the shooting or the stolen vehicle is encouraged to contact the Chicago Police Department. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
The investigation remains ongoing.
