NAPERVILLE, Ill. — A Tesla driver was injured Friday afternoon after suffering a medical emergency behind the wheel, leading to a crash that caused the vehicle to catch fire along a busy roadway in Naperville.
According to Naperville Police Department, the incident occurred on Route 59 near Cantore Road. Authorities said a 37-year-old man was driving a 2025 Tesla Model Y when he suddenly experienced a medical emergency while traveling northbound.
Police said the driver first sideswiped another vehicle before losing control. The Tesla then left the roadway, struck a tree, and burst into flames upon impact. The second vehicle involved showed minor damage, and no serious injuries were reported in that portion of the incident.
An off-duty Naperville police officer happened to witness the crash and immediately stopped to help. Officials said the officer was able to pull the driver from the burning vehicle before the fire spread further, likely preventing more serious injuries.
The driver sustained minor burns and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been released, but authorities said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the blaze, but Route 59 was temporarily shut down in both directions near the crash site to allow emergency crews to work safely and to clear debris. Traffic delays were reported in the area during the road closure.
Police said the cause of the crash appears to be medical in nature, and no citations have been issued at this time. The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not released additional details about the driver’s medical condition.
Drivers are reminded to slow down and use caution when approaching emergency scenes, and to seek medical attention if they feel unwell while operating a vehicle.
