Santa Cruz driver dies after car plunges 500 feet off Highway 1 cliff onto beach below

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, California — A Monday morning drive along one of California’s most scenic highways ended in tragedy when a man’s SUV plunged nearly 500 feet off a cliff and onto a beach below.

The victim, a 58-year-old man from Santa Rosa, was driving a black 2017 Honda Pilot southbound on Highway 1 when the crash occurred just south of Greyhound Rock Beach.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle drifted off the west edge of the roadway, struck a roadside call box, tore through vegetation, and went over the cliff edge.

What followed was a massive, multi-agency rescue effort — and a race against time.

Crews Rappelled Down to Reach Him

Emergency teams from CAL FIRE, the Santa Cruz County Fire Department, the San Mateo County Fire Department, California State Parks, and the California Highway Patrol all responded to the scene.

Video released by the CAL FIRE CZU San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit showed personnel working their way down the rugged cliff face to reach the beach where the Honda had come to rest.

Once crews made it to the shoreline, two Santa Cruz City lifeguards were also called in to assist at the crash site.

CPR Was Performed Before Helicopter Airlift

Responders found the driver at the scene and immediately began CPR.

He was then hoisted by helicopter up to Highway 1 and transferred to a waiting ambulance for further emergency care.

Despite every effort made by the crews on the ground and in the air, the driver had suffered major injuries from the fall.

Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

Cause of the Crash Still Unknown

Investigators believe the man was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

As of now, authorities have not confirmed what caused the car to leave the roadway. It is still unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role.

The California Highway Patrol said the investigation remains open and ongoing.

Highway 1 through Santa Cruz County is known for its dramatic cliffside views — but also for stretches where a momentary lapse in attention can have devastating consequences.
