A violent incident in southwest Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon left a 20-year-old man wounded and caused unexpected danger for children riding home on a nearby school bus.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers were dispatched around 3:10 p.m. to the 2600 block of Campbellton Road SW following reports of gunfire and a person shot.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they located a 20-year-old man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officials confirmed he was alert, conscious, and breathing at the time he was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His current condition has not yet been publicly updated.
As officers secured the area and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, they learned that the gunfire had also impacted a nearby school bus operated by Atlanta Public Schools.
Investigators say a stray bullet struck the bus during the incident, shattering one of its windows. At the time, the bus was carrying only the driver and two students.
The sudden impact caused glass to scatter inside the vehicle. The two children sustained minor scratches from the broken window, but no serious injuries were reported. The bus driver was unharmed.
Parents in the area expressed concern over the proximity of gun violence to school transportation routes, highlighting ongoing worries about public safety during after-school hours. School district officials are expected to review transportation safety protocols as part of standard procedures following such incidents.
Police have not yet released information regarding what led to the gunfire or whether any suspects have been identified. Detectives assigned to the department’s Aggravated Assault Unit are actively investigating the case to determine the events that triggered the shooting.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
No additional details have been released at this time.
