Suspect Killed in Deputy-Involved Shooting After High-Speed Chase Near Elementary School

Thurston County, Washington — A tense and rapidly unfolding situation in the Yelm area Tuesday afternoon ended in a fatal deputy-involved shooting, following a high-speed chase that briefly put a nearby elementary school on lockdown.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 2:37 p.m. when a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at an extremely high speed — reportedly about 90 mph in a 35 mph zone — along Yelm Highway Southeast. Instead of pulling over, the driver fled, triggering a pursuit.

Authorities say the chase escalated quickly. During the pursuit, both the suspect’s vehicle and the deputy’s vehicle were involved in crashes. After the crash, the suspect allegedly ran from the scene on foot, moving into a nearby residential area.

Deputies reported hearing gunfire coming from a backyard during the foot pursuit. Moments later, deputies engaged the suspect, and shots were fired. The suspect was struck during the encounter.

Emergency aid was immediately provided at the scene, but officials confirmed the suspect did not survive. No deputies were injured during the incident.

Investigators also confirmed that a passenger who had been in the suspect’s vehicle fled on foot during the chaos. With the help of a K-9 unit, law enforcement was able to locate and detain the individual shortly afterward.

As a precaution, McKenna Elementary School was placed on lockdown while the situation unfolded nearby. Families and staff experienced a brief period of uncertainty, but officials later confirmed the lockdown was lifted once the area was secured. Authorities reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat.

The case has now been handed over to the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations, which will conduct an independent review of the shooting, as is standard protocol in such incidents.

Officials say the investigation is still ongoing, and additional details — including the identities of those involved — will be released by the appropriate agencies in the coming days.

For now, the community is left processing a fast-moving and unsettling series of events that unfolded in the span of just a few hours.
