Rockland, Maine: A police investigation into suspected drug activity at a subsidized housing complex for elderly residents and individuals with disabilities led to the arrest of three people and the seizure of a significant amount of fentanyl and methamphetamine on Tuesday afternoon.
Officers from the Rockland Police Department responded around 3:00 p.m. following reports of possible illegal drug use inside the residential facility. During their investigation, authorities encountered multiple individuals already known to law enforcement, including people on probation, out on bail, and one subject with an active arrest warrant.
Three Suspects Taken Into Custody
Police identified the following individuals:
- Mark Gagne, 43, described as transient, is charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and violating probation. He had recently been released on probation related to prior charges that included drug trafficking and abuse of a corpse.
- Makayla Batty, 29, also described as transient, faces multiple counts of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, violation of conditions of release, and an unrelated arrest warrant for possession of scheduled drugs. She was out on several pre-conviction bail agreements at the time of her arrest.
- Tianna Brancella, 30, of Warren, is charged with felony aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs and violation of conditions of release. Authorities say she was out on four separate sets of pre-conviction bail, including bail tied to felony drug charges.
According to police, all three suspects have prior histories involving illegal drug activity.
Large Quantity of Fentanyl Seized
During the investigation, officers seized approximately 50 grams of fentanyl along with a quantity of methamphetamine.
Fentanyl is a highly potent synthetic opioid that is estimated to be about 100 times stronger than morphine. Law enforcement officials note that as little as 2 milligrams can be a potentially fatal dose. Based on that estimate, the 50 grams recovered could represent thousands of lethal doses.
Ongoing Community Safety Concerns
Authorities emphasized the seriousness of drug activity occurring within housing intended for vulnerable populations, including seniors and individuals with disabilities. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could follow.
Residents are encouraged to report suspected illegal drug activity to their local law enforcement agency to help protect community safety.
