Omaha, Nebraska: A shocking and violent incident unfolded Tuesday morning in Omaha, Nebraska, where a 3-year-old child was injured in a random knife attack outside a Walmart store. Police officers responding to the scene shot and killed the suspect within moments, preventing what authorities say could have turned into a far more tragic situation.
According to the Omaha Police Department, the incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. at a Walmart located on South 72nd Street. Emergency calls initially came in with limited information, but a second 911 caller reported that a woman armed with a large kitchen knife was actively attacking a child.
When officers arrived, they encountered a 31-year-old woman, later identified as Noemi Guzman, standing near a shopping cart with the young boy inside. Authorities said she was holding a knife, making threats, and refusing repeated commands to drop the weapon.
Within seconds, the situation escalated. Police say Guzman suddenly slashed the child while officers were attempting to de-escalate the confrontation. Faced with an immediate threat to the child’s life, both officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured child was quickly pulled to safety by his guardian and a nearby bystander. He was rushed to the hospital, where officials confirmed that his injuries, while serious, are not considered life-threatening. The boy underwent surgery and is currently recovering.
Investigators later revealed that surveillance footage showed Guzman had allegedly shoplifted the knife from inside the store moments before the attack. Authorities believe she approached the child and guardian inside the Walmart, threatened them, and forced them to move through the store before the situation spilled out into the parking lot.
Police officials described the incident as deeply disturbing and emphasized the unpredictable nature of the attack. At this time, no clear motive has been identified, and investigators are continuing to piece together what led to the violent outburst.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer stated that the responding officers acted quickly and decisively under extreme pressure, likely saving the child’s life. City officials also acknowledged the officers’ actions, noting that their response prevented a potentially larger tragedy.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities review body camera footage, witness statements, and surveillance video to better understand the full sequence of events.
For the Omaha community, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly ordinary situations can turn dangerous—and how critical rapid emergency response can be in saving lives.
