Woman arrested after teen driver killed a police officer trying to flee — here's what we know

GREENWOOD COUNTY, South Carolina — A 21-year-old woman is now facing charges after a crash that claimed the life of a Greenwood police officer and left three teenagers injured earlier this month.

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday, May 20, that Shannon Hope Henderson had been taken into custody in connection with the deadly incident.

What Happened on May 11

The crash occurred on Monday, May 11, on East Cambridge Avenue in Greenwood.

A 15-year-old driver — attempting to escape from law enforcement — struck the vehicle of Officer D.J. Keller.

Keller died at the scene.

The teenage driver and two passengers, ages 17 and 18, were also injured in the crash.

What Henderson Is Charged With

Henderson is not accused of being behind the wheel.

Instead, investigators say she contributed to the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

She faces two charges — contributing to the delinquency of a minor and allowing an unauthorized person to operate a motor vehicle.

The charges suggest Henderson may have let the 15-year-old use her vehicle, though the sheriff’s office has not confirmed the exact connection between her and the teenagers.

Key Details Still Unknown

Authorities have not yet publicly identified the three teenagers involved in the crash.

Deputies have also not explained how Henderson knew the minors or why a 15-year-old was driving the vehicle in the first place.

It remains unclear whether additional charges or arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

A Community Mourning a Fallen Officer

Officer D.J. Keller was killed in the line of duty — struck by a fleeing driver on what would have been an ordinary Monday.

His death has shaken the Greenwood community, and questions are still being asked about how a minor came to be behind the wheel and evading police that evening.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences when vehicles end up in the wrong hands.

This is a developing story. As more information becomes available, updates will be added.
