Wyoming Weather Alert: Up to 10 Inches of Snow Could Snarl I-80 Travel at Summit Until 5 p.m. Tuesday

Laramie, Wyoming – A powerful burst of winter weather is sweeping across southeast Wyoming’s high country, with up to 10 inches of snow expected to accumulate overnight. The heavy snowfall and blowing snow threaten to disrupt travel along Interstate 80 at the Summit, potentially creating dangerous whiteout conditions ahead of the Tuesday morning commute.

Snowfall Totals and Impact Areas

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday for several mountain ranges, including:

  • Sierra Madre Range
  • Snowy Range
  • North Laramie Range
  • South Laramie Range
  • I-80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie

Forecast snowfall totals include:

  • 6 to 10 inches in the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range
  • 3 to 6 inches near Arlington, Elk Mountain and Vedauwoo
  • Up to 6 additional inches in the North Laramie Range

Whiteout Conditions Possible on I-80

Blowing snow and strong crosswinds could sharply reduce visibility along I-80, particularly near Arlington and Elk Mountain — areas already known for drifting snow. As temperatures stay below freezing, bridges and overpasses are expected to ice over quickly, increasing the risk of accidents and road closures.

Drivers traveling through the Summit area should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, potential chain requirements, and possible temporary shutdowns.

Backcountry and Outdoor Risks

Outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters, snowmobilers and backcountry hikers in the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges, face especially hazardous conditions. Low visibility, sudden gusts, and rapidly shifting weather patterns could make navigation difficult and dangerous.

Travel Advisory and What to Expect

Snow is expected to continue through Tuesday, and additional advisories may be issued if snowfall bands intensify over higher elevations. Travelers are urged to monitor real-time road updates and delay nonessential travel if possible.

With winter conditions intensifying across the high country, commuters and outdoor adventurers alike should stay alert, plan ahead and prepare for challenging conditions throughout the day.
