What Happened

The shooting took place around 4:45 p.m. at the Lake Meadows Shopping Center, located on South King Drive. According to police, a dark-colored SUV approached the victims and suddenly opened fire, sending people running for cover.

Witnesses described the moment as chaotic and terrifying, with rapid gunfire echoing through the area. Several storefronts, including nearby food outlets, suffered shattered glass and visible bullet damage.

Victims and Their Condition

Three individuals were injured in the attack:

  • An 8-year-old girl suffered a gunshot wound to her foot and was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she is reported to be in good condition.
  • A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times (arm, chest, and groin) and taken to Stroger Hospital.
  • A 28-year-old woman was shot in the knee and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Thankfully, all victims are currently stable.

Eyewitness Accounts

One man inside a nearby café described hearing dozens of gunshots in seconds. As he exited, he saw victims lying on the ground and suffered minor injuries himself due to shattered glass.

Nearby businesses, including salons and gyms, immediately went into lockdown for safety. Panic spread quickly as people rushed to find shelter.

A Disturbing Location

The incident is especially alarming because it occurred near schools, including Urban Prep Charter Academy and a nearby elementary school. The timing and location have intensified fears among residents.

Local residents expressed frustration and fear:

“It’s heartbreaking… kids are not even safe anymore. It feels like nobody is safe.”

Investigation Ongoing

As of now, no arrests have been made. Authorities have launched an active investigation, reviewing evidence and searching for the suspects involved.

Community Impact

This incident highlights a growing concern about safety in everyday public spaces — shopping centers, schools, and neighborhoods that should feel secure. For many residents, this is not just another news story, but a reminder of how unpredictable and close to home such violence can be.

The community now waits for answers — and hopes for swift action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
