A tragic incident unfolded in Porterville on Thursday morning when a sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed while carrying out an eviction notice, authorities confirmed.
According to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the area of Newcomb and Grand avenues around 10:20 a.m. During the process, a 60-year-old suspect, David Morales, allegedly opened fire, striking one of the deputies.
The injured officer, later identified as Randy Hoppert, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, the 35-year-old deputy, who had served the department for six years, succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Morales fled the scene, prompting a large-scale law enforcement response. Authorities reported continued gunfire in the area hours later, creating a tense situation for residents.
By the evening, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux confirmed that the suspect had died after being struck by a SWAT vehicle during the operation.
Officials urged residents to remain indoors throughout the incident, and nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution to ensure public safety.
The loss of Deputy Hoppert has deeply impacted the local community and law enforcement agencies, highlighting the risks officers face even during routine duties.
