Washington, D.C. — A tragic incident unfolded in Southeast Washington, D.C., on Thursday evening when a 5-year-old boy lost his life after falling into the Anacostia River. The heartbreaking accident occurred at Anacostia Park, where families had gathered to enjoy a warm spring evening.
According to officials from the Metropolitan Police Department, the emergency call came in around 6:20 p.m. First responders arrived to find the child unconscious after he had already been pulled from the water by family members and a bystander.
Witnesses at the scene described the moments leading up to the incident. A man who was fishing nearby said the children were playing close to the river when the boy suddenly fell in. Someone immediately jumped into the water to rescue him, but it remains unclear how long the child had been submerged before he was found.
People nearby quickly began performing CPR in a desperate attempt to save the boy. Emergency crews from DC Fire and EMS continued life-saving efforts upon arrival. The child was then airlifted to a hospital by a helicopter operated by the U.S. Park Police.
Despite these efforts, the boy was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities believe the incident was an accidental drowning. Police have spoken with witnesses and individuals who tried to assist during the emergency as part of their ongoing review.
The incident happened in a busy area of Anacostia Park, within view of picnic pavilions where families were grilling and spending time together, making the tragedy even more distressing for those present.
Officials also reminded the public that swimming in the Anacostia River is strictly prohibited due to safety concerns, including strong currents and water conditions.
The situation has left the local community shaken, as what began as a normal evening outdoors turned into a devastating loss for a family.
