Train Derailment Shuts Down Foothills Boulevard, Sparks Fire in Rail Cars

A train derailment in Roseville on Sunday evening led to the closure of a major roadway and prompted an emergency response after two rail cars caught fire. Authorities say the situation was brought under control quickly, and no injuries have been reported.

The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. near the Foothills Boulevard overpass at a railyard operated by Union Pacific Railroad. According to officials, approximately 10 rail cars derailed, causing disruption in the area and raising initial safety concerns.

Emergency crews from the Roseville Fire Department responded to the scene shortly after the derailment was reported. Firefighters confirmed that two of the derailed rail cars caught fire. Crews worked to contain the flames and ensure there was no further risk to surrounding areas.

Officials stated that despite the fire, there was no immediate threat to nearby residents or businesses. Importantly, no hazardous materials were involved in the derailment, reducing the potential for a larger emergency.

As a precaution, both directions of Foothills Boulevard—from Cirby Way to Denio Loop—were closed to traffic. Authorities indicated that the road would remain shut down until at least 5 a.m. Monday to allow crews to safely clear the tracks and assess any damage.

Union Pacific confirmed that an investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the derailment. At this stage, officials have not released further details about what may have led to the incident.

The situation remains under monitoring, and updates are expected as cleanup efforts continue and more information becomes available.
