Joliet, Illinois — A routine narcotics investigation in Joliet took a disturbing turn this week when police uncovered an illegal cockfighting operation inside a residential property, leading to the rescue of nearly 30 animals and the arrest of two men.
According to the Joliet Police Department, officers from the narcotics unit executed a search warrant Wednesday at a home located in the 400 block of Meeker Avenue. The raid was part of an ongoing drug investigation, but what they discovered inside went far beyond illegal substances.
What Happened During the Raid
Authorities reported finding cocaine, cash, and materials commonly associated with drug distribution. However, as officers searched the property, they also discovered equipment linked to organized animal fighting, prompting immediate concern.
The department’s Animal Crimes Team was called to the scene, where they obtained a second warrant to fully investigate the suspected cockfighting activity. Inside the home, officials found 29 animals, including roosters, hens, chicks, and even a young terrier puppy.
Signs of Animal Cruelty
Investigators said several roosters showed clear signs of having been used in cockfighting. These included physical alterations and the presence of metal spurs, straps, medications, and specialized carrier containers—items commonly used in illegal animal fighting operations.
The rescued animals have since been handed over to Joliet Township Animal Control, where they are receiving medical attention and care.
Arrests and Charges
Police identified two suspects in connection with the case:
- Roland Rodriguez-Gasca, 39, was taken into custody during a traffic stop shortly before the raid after officers observed him leaving the residence.
- Fortino Rodriguez, 51, was arrested at the scene during the search.
