Lac County, Wisconsin- A tragic incident in Fond du Lac County has left a family grieving after a 2-year-old boy was fatally shot in what authorities are calling an apparent accidental shooting involving a firearm left inside a vehicle.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an emergency call on the morning of April 10 reporting that a young child had been shot. When first responders arrived at the residence, they found the toddler suffering from gunshot wounds. A medical helicopter was immediately requested, but despite urgent lifesaving efforts at the scene, the child was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital.
What Happened
Investigators revealed that three young children were inside a vehicle parked in the driveway of the home at the time of the incident. Authorities said that one of the parents had briefly stepped away, leaving the children unattended for a short period.
During that time, a 4-year-old child allegedly discovered a loaded firearm in the vehicle’s center console. The weapon discharged, striking the 2-year-old.
Officials described the incident as a devastating accident. At this stage, there is no indication of intentional harm, and law enforcement has stated that foul play is not suspected.
Family Identifies the Victim
While authorities have not officially released the child’s identity, a fundraiser organized by family members identified the victim as Crewe Zahradnik. The campaign described the loss as a “heartbreaking accident” and an “unimaginable tragedy,” highlighting the emotional and financial burden now facing the family.
Funds are being raised to help cover funeral expenses, grief counseling, and lost income during this difficult time.
Investigation and Possible Charges
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the firearm discharged inside the vehicle, leading to the fatal injury. Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active, and all circumstances surrounding the incident are being carefully reviewed.
Although no charges have been filed so far, authorities noted that criminal charges could still be considered once the investigation is complete.
A Preventable Tragedy
Incidents like this highlight the critical importance of firearm safety, especially in homes with children. Leaving a loaded gun unsecured, even for a short period, can lead to irreversible consequences.
This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how quickly accidents can happen and the importance of proper storage, including keeping firearms locked and out of reach of children at all times.
As the community processes this loss, the focus remains on supporting the grieving family and understanding how such incidents can be prevented in the future.
