Federal agents delivered a massive blow to one of California’s most dangerous criminal organizations Thursday morning — and the numbers are staggering.
The FBI, alongside local authorities, executed search and arrest warrants at 30 locations across Orange County in a single early morning operation targeting the Mexican Mafia. More than two dozen members were arrested as part of a sweeping federal indictment that names 43 people total.
What Was Seized: Among the seized items were 120 pounds of methamphetamine, over 8 pounds of fentanyl, 25 firearms, and more than $30,000 in cash — all taken off Southern California streets in one day.
The Shocking Prison Connection:
Perhaps the most alarming detail — one leader allegedly ran the entire operation from inside a California state prison using contraband cellphones. From his cell, he reportedly directed kidnappings, assaults, and drug trafficking between June 2024 and April 2026.
Charges Include: Murder, kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, and running illegal gambling operations across commercial strip malls and private residences in the region.
“The stuff that we’re taking off the streets is very, very dangerous. These guys have no regard for human life,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli.
Who Is the Mexican Mafia?
Founded in the 1950s inside a California juvenile jail, the Mexican Mafia grew into an international criminal organization controlling drug sales, smuggling, and extortion — largely operated from within California’s prison system.
The gang is also suspected in a murder at a gang-controlled motel in Anaheim.
Defendants began making their initial court appearances Thursday in federal court across Los Angeles and Orange counties.
