'He Was Supposed to Graduate That Morning' — Aledo Community Mourns 14-Year-Old Killed in ATV Crash

The night before Brayden Martin was set to walk across the graduation stage, the 14-year-old was killed in an ATV crash. Now, his North Texas community is left grieving a milestone that never came.

What happened

Aledo Independent School District confirmed that Brayden, an 8th grader at Aledo Middle School, died Wednesday night. The crash involved an all-terrain vehicle, according to school officials and his select baseball team.

Thursday morning — the day of graduation — the district brought in extra counselors and support staff for students and teachers struggling with the loss.

“We have asked our entire community to pray for Brayden’s family, friends and teachers,” the district said in a statement to families.

Tributes pour in

Brayden’s baseball team, Wildcatters NTX 14U, remembered him as more than a teammate. “His love for the game, his smile, and the impact he made on everyone around him will never be forgotten,” the team wrote online. He wore jersey number 10.

Another family who knows this pain

Glen Bates, whose 11-year-old son Noah died in a similar UTV crash four years ago, spoke to the grief the Martin family now faces.

“When you lose a child, you enter into a club that no parent ever wants to be a part of,” Bates said. “It’s a lifelong journey.”

After Noah’s death, the Bates family launched the Noah Bates Memorial Foundation, which focuses on ATV and UTV safety education for young riders.

A preventable tragedy

Federal data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that children under 16 make up a significant share of ATV-related deaths nationwide — and most of those victims are boys.

“These accidents are preventable,” Bates said. “It just takes engagement. It takes conversation.”

Brayden’s family has asked for privacy as their community continues to rally around them. He is remembered as a son, a teammate, and a kid who had everything ahead of him.
