PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — If you stepped outside this weekend and thought it felt more like August than May, you were not wrong.
Sunday marked the beginning of Philadelphia’s first heat wave of 2026, and the extreme heat is not going anywhere until Wednesday night.
A Next Weather Alert is now in effect from noon today through Wednesday evening.
Records Could Fall Every Single Day This Week
Philadelphia is on track to chase new record highs three days in a row.
Monday could hit 94 degrees. Tuesday may push to 97. Wednesday is expected to reach 96 before storms move in late in the day.
In Philadelphia, a heat wave means three or more consecutive days in the 90s. That threshold is being met — and then some.
Overnight lows will offer little relief either, staying in the upper 60s to low 70s. That kind of warm overnight air is what makes extended heat events genuinely dangerous.
Feels Like 100 — Here Is What That Means for You
The heat index — what the air actually feels like on your skin — could approach 100 degrees during peak afternoon hours.
That level of heat puts real strain on the body, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
A few things to keep in mind this week:
- Drink water consistently throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty
- Avoid being outdoors during peak heat hours, typically between noon and 5 p.m.
- Check in on elderly neighbors or family members who may not have AC
- Bring pets indoors and never leave animals in parked vehicles
Storms Are Coming — But So Is Relief
An isolated shower or storm is possible each afternoon and evening through the week.
The bigger weather event arrives Wednesday evening when a cold front pushes through the region with scattered, gusty thunderstorms. It is still too early to confirm how severe those storms could be, but the potential is there.
Then, almost overnight, everything changes.
Behind that cold front, temperatures will plummet nearly 30 degrees in just 24 hours. Thursday’s high is expected to reach only 66 degrees — well below the normal mid-70s for this time of year.

Plan Ahead for Memorial Day Weekend
The holiday weekend will feel nothing like this week.

Summer arrived early this year — enjoy it safely, because a very different kind of weekend is already on the way.
