Richardson police officers shot a robbery suspect Monday afternoon after he opened fire on them near E. Belt Line Road, the department confirmed in a news release.
Officers were dispatched around 4 p.m. to the 1400 block of East Belt Line Road after an employee at a local business called in an active robbery. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already fled on foot — and hadn’t gotten away with anything.
Police spotted a man matching the suspect’s description walking east of the business and moved in to make contact. During the encounter, the suspect fired at least one round at officers. An officer returned fire and struck the suspect.
“First thing I hear is ‘get down, get down.’ POW! One shot, two shots altogether. No more than that.”— Daniel Abdollahi, witness at a nearby business
Abdollahi, who was at a neighboring business at the time, said the suspect was carrying a handgun. Richardson PD transported the suspect to a local hospital — his current condition has not been released.
Belt Line Road was shut down in both directions between N. Plano Road and N. St. Johns Drive for several hours while investigators worked the scene.
The Richardson Police Department has notified the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office to conduct a simultaneous, independent investigation — standard practice in officer-involved shootings in Texas.
The suspect’s identity has not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
