A suspected drug trafficking operation was disrupted in Abbotsford late Monday night (March 23) after officers arrested three individuals and seized a significant quantity of cocaine along with thousands of dollars in cash.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 9 p.m. near the intersection of Gillis Avenue and McCallum Road. Officers apprehended two men and one woman, all believed to be in their twenties. During the arrest, authorities confiscated approximately 73 grams of cocaine and more than $4,500 in cash.
Investigators noted that the amount of cocaine recovered was substantial for a street-level operation. For perspective, the quantity far exceeds the lethal dose linked to the infamous 1985 “Cocaine Bear” incident in the United States, which later inspired a Hollywood film. While the comparison underscores the seriousness of the seizure, police emphasized that their primary focus remains on disrupting local trafficking networks and preventing dangerous substances from circulating in the community.
In addition to the drugs and cash, officers also seized a 2014 Honda Civic allegedly used in connection with the suspected operation. The Abbotsford Police Department has initiated proceedings to have the vehicle forfeited as offence-related property under applicable laws.
Authorities have not released the names of the suspects as charges are still being finalized. The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates may follow as the case progresses through the legal system.
Despite isolated incidents such as this, recent data indicates that British Columbia reports one of the lowest percentages of self-reported cocaine use among Canadian provinces. A 2019 study found that approximately 0.8 percent of B.C. residents aged 15 and older reported using cocaine — significantly lower than some other provinces. Additionally, official statistics show that cocaine trafficking cases in the province have declined in recent years, with reported incidents dropping substantially between 2019 and 2023.
Police officials reiterated their commitment to proactive enforcement and community safety, stating that targeted operations and routine patrol efforts continue to play a key role in identifying and dismantling drug distribution activities across Abbotsford.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to local authorities as part of ongoing efforts to keep neighborhoods safe.
