A tragic accident in Washington has left a local community grieving after an 18-year-old high school senior lost his life in a single-vehicle crash. Authorities say the young victim became trapped underneath an overturned SUV, leading to his death at the scene.
According to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on Saturday, April 18, when emergency responders were called to reports of a vehicle lying on its side with a person trapped underneath. The crash involved a Toyota 4Runner carrying multiple passengers.
When officials arrived, they found the victim, identified as Elden Ragsdale, unresponsive and trapped beneath the SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Elden was a senior at Mark Morris High School and was well-known in his community.
Authorities confirmed that the driver, Jacob Manecke Jr., 19, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officials believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash. The case remains under active investigation, and findings will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
Three other passengers in the vehicle were injured and taken to a nearby hospital. Their conditions have not been publicly detailed but are not believed to be fatal.
The loss has deeply impacted the local school community. In a message shared with families, principal Aaron Whitright expressed condolences, acknowledging how the death of a young student affects classmates, teachers, and families alike.
Elden’s parents also shared an emotional tribute, describing him as a kind and genuine person who valued his relationships deeply. They spoke about his future plans, including attending linemen school, and his passion for cars, racing, and outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.
A fundraiser has been set up to support the family during this difficult time.
Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and further updates are expected as more details become available.
