Alaska Winter Storm Alert: Up to 18 Inches of Snow Could Disrupt Travel Across Denali and Eastern Range

Fairbanks, Alaska – A powerful winter storm is set to impact large parts of Interior Alaska beginning Sunday, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions across key highways and mountain passes.

According to the National Weather Service office in Fairbanks, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Tuesday afternoon for the Northern Denali Borough and Upper Tanana Valley. Forecasters warn that higher elevations—especially above 1,500 feet—could receive more than a foot of snow, with isolated areas approaching 18 inches.

The most severe impacts are expected along major routes including the Alaska Highway, Richardson Highway, and Parks Highway. The stretch between Delta Junction and Tok may see snowfall exceeding 12 inches, combined with wind gusts up to 35 mph, creating blowing snow and near-zero visibility at times.

Travel through Denali National Park and surrounding areas could become extremely difficult, with possible lane closures and drifting snow. Communities such as Healy, Anderson, and Tok are also expected to face slick roads and prolonged hazardous conditions.

Officials advise residents to prepare in advance by winterizing vehicles, stocking emergency supplies, and ensuring adequate heating fuel. Those who must travel are urged to carry blankets, food, and water, and to inform others of their plans.

Conditions are expected to worsen rapidly starting Sunday afternoon, with impacts likely continuing into Tuesday night. Authorities are closely monitoring the storm, and warnings may be upgraded as it develops.
