Halfmoon, New York — A heartbreaking case out of Saratoga County has shocked the local community, where a 10-year-old boy’s death has resulted in serious criminal charges against his mother. Authorities say the child died after being given a dangerous amount of medication, raising concerns about misuse of common drugs in parenting situations.
What Happened
According to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an unattended death call around 9:40 a.m. on January 19 at a residence on Route 146 in Halfmoon, located roughly 20 miles north of Albany.
When first responders arrived, they discovered the child deceased at the home. At the time, the exact cause of death was unclear, prompting a detailed and lengthy investigation involving forensic analysis and toxicology testing.
Investigation and Arrest
After months of investigation, authorities arrested 43-year-old Rebecca A. Jordan on April 15. She now faces multiple charges, including second-degree manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Investigators allege that Jordan gave her son an excessive amount of diphenhydramine, the active ingredient found in medications like Benadryl. Officials say the dosage was dangerously high—reportedly enough to be fatal even for an adult.
Cause of Death
Toxicology results revealed that the child suffered from drug intoxication, which led to aspiration of stomach contents and restricted breathing. Authorities believe these complications ultimately caused his death.
The Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office, led by Brett Eby, described the case as highly unusual.
Eby stated that the amount of medication involved was far beyond any reasonable or safe dosage. He emphasized that such circumstances are rarely seen in similar cases handled by prosecutors.
Motive Behind the Incident
Investigators say there is no evidence that the child requested medication or that it was given for typical medical reasons such as allergies or sleep. Instead, authorities believe the drug was administered in an attempt to manage what were described as “behavioral issues.”
Jeffrey Brown said the intent appeared to be to make the child sleep, but the outcome proved fatal due to the excessive dosage.
Alleged Evidence Tampering
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Jordan is accused of attempting to hide a bottle of the medication during the investigation. Authorities say this action was intended to prevent the evidence from being used in official proceedings.
Legal Proceedings and Current Status
Jordan was arraigned in Malta Town Court and is currently being held at the Saratoga County Jail as the case moves forward. Prosecutors stated that the manslaughter charge alone carries a potential prison sentence of 5 to 15 years, with additional penalties possible if convicted of evidence tampering.
A Tragic Case Under Investigation
Officials described the case as one of the most difficult types they encounter. Law enforcement emphasized their commitment to seeking justice for the child.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not released further details, but the case highlights the serious risks associated with improper medication use and the devastating consequences that can follow.
The situation remains under legal review, and additional updates are expected as court proceedings continue.
