Des Moines, Iowa — A late-afternoon report of gunfire near Pioneer Park on the city’s south side led to the arrest and charging of six individuals on Tuesday, according to the Des Moines Police Department. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, but the incident prompted a significant police response and ongoing investigation.

What Happened

Police said officers were dispatched just after 5 p.m. following multiple reports of gunfire near Pioneer Park, located at 1650 E. Pioneer Road. When officers arrived at the scene, they searched a nearby wooded area and located six individuals who were then taken into custody.

During the investigation, law enforcement recovered two rifles, ammunition, and spent shell casings. Additional items, including marijuana and cash, were also discovered with the assistance of a K-9 unit from Altoona Police Department.

Charges Filed

According to officials, two juveniles were referred to Polk County Juvenile Court and charged with reckless use of a firearm and interference with official acts.

Four adults were also charged in connection with the incident:

  • Josue Marin Perez Bueso, 26
  • Jesus Cruz, 20
  • Alfredo Martinez-Torres, 18
  • Alexander Ruiz Shipley, 18

All four face charges of reckless use of a firearm and interference with official acts. In addition, Martinez-Torres faces extra charges, including possession of a controlled substance and being a person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons.

Officials clarified that an earlier report incorrectly stated that five of those involved were juveniles, calling it a clerical error.

Authorities emphasized that, despite the seriousness of the situation, there is no ongoing threat to the public. The area was secured shortly after officers arrived, and the investigation remains active as police continue to review evidence and determine the circumstances leading up to the gunfire.

Ongoing Investigation

The incident highlights continued concerns around firearm-related activity in public spaces. Police have not yet disclosed what led to the gunfire or whether the individuals involved were targeting anyone specifically.

Officials say more details may be released as the investigation progresses.
