Parents in Central Florida are urging school officials to take action after a high school teacher was arrested in connection with a crash that left a 16-year-old student with severe injuries.
Authorities in Casselberry say 49-year-old Benjamin Fottler, a teacher at Winter Park High School, is facing a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury. Investigators allege that on December 11, Fottler struck 16-year-old Landon Cates while the teenager was riding his scooter to school.
According to police, Fottler contacted 911 hours later, saying he believed he had hit a “sign in the median” while making a left turn. However, investigators determined that the impact involved the student, not a roadside object. Officials say Fottler continued driving to work, leaving the injured teen in the roadway.
Landon suffered a broken back along with multiple bruises and scratches. His family says he continues to deal with the physical and emotional aftermath of the crash, and surgery may still be required.
Residents expressed shock over the allegations, especially given that the accused works at a local high school. Some parents say they are deeply concerned about student safety and are calling for the school district to terminate the teacher’s employment.
Orange County Public Schools confirmed that Fottler remains employed, noting that the incident did not occur during school hours or on campus. The district has not publicly announced any disciplinary action beyond acknowledging the ongoing legal process.
Landon’s mother, Callista Cates, said the emotional toll has been overwhelming for her son. The family has since moved from their neighborhood, saying it was too difficult for Landon to pass by the crash site or remain so close to the accused.
She also voiced concerns about the potential trauma her son could face if he returns to school and encounters the teacher in the classroom.
Fottler was arrested and later released on a $20,000 bond. The case remains under investigation as the community continues to watch closely for further developments.
