Residents across northern New York are waking up to a windy start, as a Wind Advisory remains in effect through the afternoon. The National Weather Service office in Burlington has warned that steady southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will intensify, with gusts reaching as high as 50 mph in some areas.
Communities across the Champlain Valley may experience slightly lower gusts, closer to 40 mph, but still strong enough to cause disruptions. The advisory is active from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., aligning with peak commuting hours and increasing the risk of travel challenges.
Forecasters say winds at this level can easily snap small tree limbs and occasionally bring down power lines, which may result in scattered outages. Drivers, especially those operating larger vehicles like trucks or SUVs, should remain cautious as sudden gusts could make steering difficult.
Officials are urging residents to take simple precautions—secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and any loose items that could become airborne. Even lightweight objects can turn into hazards under strong wind conditions.
While the system is expected to weaken later in the day, the morning and early afternoon hours remain the most critical. Staying alert and planning ahead can help minimize inconvenience as the region rides out these blustery conditions.
